Shogun CONNECT builds on the pedigree of the ground-breaking Shogun product line. Every detail has been redesigned from the ground up to make Shogun CONNECT the most powerful and versatile device ATOMOS has ever created.

Featuring a much brighter 7-inch 2000nit screen and multiple recording options, Shogun CONNECT provides a premium experience for HDR monitoring and RAW recording. In addition, it includes a loop through 12G SDI IN and OUT interface, which can support SDI RAW, and is able to send a video signal to multiple devices.

As you would expect from an ATOMOS device, Shogun CONNECT combines high-quality monitoring and many different industry-standard recording formats. It also transforms digital cinema, mirrorless, and DSLR cameras into fully integrated devices that support a range of advanced cloud-based workflows.

Brilliant, Daylight-Viewable Screen

The new 7-inch, daylight-viewable SuperAtom IPS touchscreen is more responsive and is perfect for outdoor use, even in direct sunlight, although it can be adjusted for darker environments to avoid glare.

Compact. Secure.

From individuals to large-scale cinema productions, Shogun CONNECT has been built to fit into any camera rig. It features a versatile mount that can be adapted to suit different industry-standard equipment from a wide range of manufacturers. Once locked in place the mount is highly secure and offers anti-rotation settings, so you can trust Shogun CONNECT to remain in place at all times.

A Complete Monitoring Toolbox

Shogun CONNECT offers a comprehensive range of monitoring tools including a waveform, focus peaking, false colour, and frame guides to help you get the composition and exposure exactly right. The AtomOS software is so easy to use and the control it provides over your images, you’ll never want to resort to relying on your camera screen or EVF again.

Powered for the Future

Shogun CONNECT is built around the latest ATOMOS silicon, the AtomIC3. The processor provides all the performance to handle the demands of the very latest cameras. It can manage higher frame rates and increased resolutions. Currently the device supports the RAW output of various cameras up to 4K at 120fps and 12-bit 8K ProRes RAW up to 30fps via HDMI or SDI.

Wireless Remote Control

The AtomRemote app for iOS and macOS offers an array of external controls for Shogun CONNECT*. The app enables you to perform a range of configuration tasks and operations up to 15 meters away from the device via Bluetooth LE. Input options include the ability to define camera connections, select Gamma/EOTF, and adjust Gamut settings. For monitoring, AtomRemote can be used to control playback, choose monitoring modes, apply custom 3D LUTs, or view image analysis tools including exposure and focus. Output controls include options for 4K to HD, LUT preview, and HDR output.
* Scheduled for release Q4/2022

Wireless Timecode

ATOMOS AirGlu™ adds wireless timecode, sync, and control technology to Shogun CONNECT. AirGlu locks multiple ATOMOS devices or compatible cameras, audio recorders, and software applications together so that they share the same frame-accurate timecode. It is also able to relay recording, battery status, and disk capacity information to the server unit. Any AirGlu device can act as the server unit, which means you’ll no longer need a huge budget or get involved in time consuming post-production workflows to produce perfectly synchronized, multi-camera video.

Supported Resolutions & Frame Rates

To save space and support longer recordings, many cameras record compressed 4:2:0 8-bit video internally. If the camera is able to output video via HDMI, the quality can often be preserved in a 4:2:2 8-bit or 10-bit format. Shogun CONNECT can record more color information and immediately add value to your production with your existing camera rig. Additionally, if you’re shooting Log footage, the ability to bypass internal compression will offer the best possible dynamic range. Shogun CONNECT is designed to maximize the quality of your videos and allow you to extend every aspect of your creative vision. Shogun CONNECT also includes 12G-SDI input, the standard on high-end cinema cameras, including the Sony FX series, Panasonic EVA1, and Canon EOS C series. The robustness and utility of SDI is critical for the productions that rely on it. SDI-RAW provides the ultimate experience in terms of flexibility and quality, which makes Shogun CONNECT the ideal choice for big budget filmmakers around the world.

Professional Codec Support

With flexible options for industry standard formats and RAW codecs, Shogun CONNECT records visually lossless “hero” files that are ready for editing and proxy/sharable files that look great but are quick to upload. Shogun CONNECT is designed to be versatile and meet the requirements of your workflow. ATOMOS understands the value in being able to select the format, quality, resolution, frame rate, or file size that best suits the needs of your production.

  • Apple ProRes RAW
Up to 16-bit RAW via HDMI or SDI.
  • Apple ProRes
Edit-ready codec from Apple with scalable levels of compression.
  • Avid DNxHD/HR
Edit-ready codec from Avid, with scalable levels of compression.
  • HEVC (H.265)
A highly efficient compressed codec that allows you to create high-quality, low bit-rate and smaller-sized files for sharing. You can also create 4K HDR 10-bit deliverables with the option to “bake in” custom LUTs to achieve specialist looks during production.

HDR & LUTs

The newly designed 7-inch HDR touchscreen on Shogun CONNECT ensures that you always see an accurate representation of your image. You can adjust exposure, check focus, apply overlays, custom LUTs, and zoom the picture to examine specific details. The tools are designed to provide confidence that what you see is what is recorded. Shogun CONNECT can be used to share a live feed to the director, producer, or client. It can also be used to playback footage to creatives and teams on-set. And with support for Adobe Camera to Cloud (C2C) powered by Frame.io, collaboration can happen remotely too. Shogun CONNECT offers more opportunities to perfect each shot and collaborate for the crews on-set, on location, or anywhere in the world. The versatile feature set also offers many advantages to speed up post-production and finishing processes.

Shogun CONNECT supports popular Log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC. These can be used to preview SDR or HDR LUTs in real-time. You can choose from up to eight custom 3D LUTs at any one time. Simply select LUT (*.cube) files from the removable SSD card. LUTs can also be displayed during playout or burnt to recorded files.

Record without Limitation

The ability to record up to 8K using advanced edit-ready formats including ProRes RAW, ProRes, and Avid DNxHD/HR requires fast, robust, and expansive storage. Shogun CONNECT supports removable SSD drives, which provide the space and sustained performance to meet these needs. AtomX SSDmini drives are more compact than standard SATA SSDs and offer an affordable alternative to an SD card of similar capacity or performance. They offer up to 2TB storage, sequential read speeds of up to 550MB/s and write speeds up to 500MB/s. The AtomX SSDmini drives are able to record up to 150 minutes of 4K ProRes. Measuring 8cm long, 7.5cm wide and weighing as little as 88g, the custom-built drive neatly fits into the Shogun CONNECT without impacting the overall footprint of the device.

With Shogun CONNECT the only limitation to how much you can record is the size of the SSD. Because AtomX SSD drives provide much greater recording capacity than SD cards and reduce the sustained performance burden associated with in-camera recording, which makes extended takes and event recording significantly more manageable.

Take Photography to the Next Level | SWPP 2023

As we breeze into another month of 2023, Holdan now looks forward to the Societies of Photographers London Photo Convention and Trade Show spanning from 16th -18th March 2023. Professionals to enthusiasts are welcome to attend the convention and trade show – which we recommend is a must.

Speed up your production workflow

As the production and creative industries become more and more competitive, the need for a quick and efficient, yet high-quality post-production workflow has become even more prominent. Although some of this technology has been around for a while, like with most new technology it’s expensive to start with. This usually means it’s not within the budget for most creatives & production companies, until now.

Holdan at the Photography Show

The Photography Show runs from 17th to 20th September at the NEC Birmingham and showcases over 250 imaging brands with masterclasses, seminars, and live demos from professionals in the industry.

Lounging with Holdan at MPTS 2022

After an absence of 3 years, the Media Production & Technology show (MPTS) was back with a bang as over 8,000 people literally queued around the block for the 2-day event at London Olympia. Holdan showcased the latest technology with a striking Tech Lounge, a mocktail bar envisioned and created by our own Graphic Designer Jo Mohan, working alongside Design Consultant Martha Camarillo.

Holdan @ NAB22 – Day One Report

After an absence of three years, the NAB Show is back with a rash of signature product launches. It’s probably no coincidence that the past 36 months have seen little in the way of innovation in the broadcast and professional video industry, apart from a slew of mirrorless cameras. The unstoppable force that is the engineer needs the immovable object – the trade show – to get the creative juices flowing it would seem.

Known Limitations to be resolved in future releases:

  • It may take up to 10 seconds for Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections to re-establish when users switch between Record and Playback mode. Please allow the system time to automatically reconnect to your network.
  • Enabling Wi-Fi may be intermittent. A dialogue message may suggest a system reboot to fix.
  • WFM monitor tool is not available for 8kp30 and 6Kp60 RAW inputs.
  • Changing resolutions and frame rate when Live Streaming mode is enabled may result in the stream stopping. Switching between Record and Playback mode will allow for Stream to restart. Press LIVE button to stop stream before changing inputs, resolutions or frame rates.
  • Live Streaming is only available when using standard YCC 422 video inputs, and when the record codec is set to either ProRes or DNx. If ProRes RAW or H.265 are selected as the record codec, streaming isn't available.
  • If the user boots into ProRes RAW recording mode with a YCC SDI Input, the monitoring image may be incorrect. Monitoring and Recording whilst outputting a RAW signal to the SHOGUN CONNECT in ProRes RAW mode will work as expected.
  • Network Record Control is not available when H.265 is selected as the record format.
  • In playback mode, selecting the first ProRes RAW file to view, some artifacts may be visible. These are not present in the recorded file and will not appear on any clips played after the first selected clip.
  • If switching between different camera models whilst HDMI Compatibility mode is selected, ensure that you reboot the SHOGUN CONNECT before connecting a new camera.
